City Persona

How does one best convey one's intentions ...?

... if one is even consciously aware of them.

It also happens that one simply has to give an image or a text a certain form or expression without actually having any clear thought or conscious awareness behind it.

My frequent city walks—always with a camera at the ready—made me increasingly aware of how most people adopt certain postures and facial expressions when moving through public spaces.

It was interesting and thought-provoking to observe what happened when two people who knew each other met:

Immediately, their body language and facial expressions changed.

These reflections and observations form the background for the "City Persona" series.

A "persona" is a social or psychological role or character that a person adopts, often to present themselves in a certain way to others.

The term is used in various contexts.

In the study "City Persona", the concept is applied in the psychological sense attributed to it by the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.

According to Jung, a persona is the social mask that an individual presents outwardly.

It is the personality a person shows to the world, often to meet social expectations, but which may differ from their inner, true self.

People may have a professional persona that is more formal and controlled, while with friends and family, they reveal a more relaxed and genuine side.

Ideal Exhibition Hanging

Three "City Persona" (out of a total of 12) displayed

on each of the four sides of the 10 cm-high platform.

The images are hung with the front facing outward

at varying distances from the edge of the platform.

Subtle backlighting behind the personae

to evoke a dreamlike, ethereal atmosphere.

Other works are from the series:

a) "Trees – also a kind of people"

"b) Herring – also a kind of people"

c)  "hARTcore"  with QR codes

linking to "powerful" images online.

Framed and mounted on a concrete wall creates a completely different impression.
